Textbook: Single Variable University Calculus, Early Transcendentals,
2nd ed., by Hass, Weir and Thomas
IMPORTANT DATES AND TIME:
The three midterm exams will take place on
Wednesday,
Sept. 21,
Oct. 19, and
Nov. 16,
from 7pm to 9pm.
The final
exam will be on Thursday,
Dec. 15,
from 3:30pm to 5:30pm.
You can find
the seat assigment and look up exam scores online at the mathematics
department's web page
http://wumath.wustl.edu/undergraduate/calculus
EXAM POLICY:
Each of the exams consists of 20
questions, each worth 5 points. There will be 18
multiple-choice questions and 2 free-response questions for
the three midterm exams, and 20 multiple-choice questions for the final
exam.
NO CALCULATORS of any kind are allowed
in the exams; you should understand calculus through your own mind's
eye. You can use a 3-by-5 index card as a "cheat sheet".
You will be given an excuse of absence
for any of the midterm exams for verified illness or serious family
emergency. There will be NO make-up midterm exams with the excuse of
absence; the average of your remaining midterm scores will be used as
the missing midterm score. If you miss
the final exam with an excuse of absence, you will be given a make-up
final exam at the beginning of the next semester.
QUIZZES:
There will be 5 quizzes, each worth 10 points, in
the discussion section (scheduled on Thursdays) you are enrolled in.
The quiz dates will be given below in the course syllabus. NO
CALCULATORS are allowed in the quizzes.
WEBWORK:
There will be 5 Webwork assignments, each
worth 10 points, which are the homework assignments, whose due dates
are given below in the syllabus. Again the above web address directs
you to the Webwork link. Each of the first 4 assignments
consists of 10 questions with equal weight and the 5th one of 20
questions, to be scaled down to 10, with equal weight. You can access
all the 5 Webwork
assignments on the first day of class.
GRADE POLICY:
Your final exam score will replace
one of the lowest of your midterm scores, provided the former is higher
than
the latter. The exams will constitute 70%. Webwork do 20%, and
quizzes do 10% , of your overall score. So if M1, M2, M3, F, Q1,
..., Q5, and W1, ..., W5 represent respectively the 3 midterm, final, 5
quiz
and 5 webwork scores. Let M = M1 + M2 + M3 and N =
min(M1,M2,M3).
Then your overall score S will be
S = (M - N + max(N,F) + F)*0.175 + (Q1
+...+ Q5)*0.2 + (W1 +...+ (W5/2))*0.4
The letter grade scale will be
A-, A, or A+: 90 <= S <= 100
B-, B, or B+: 70 <= S < 90
C-, C, or C+: 60 <= S < 69
D: 50 <= S < 59
F : S < 50
The plus or minus to the letter
grade will be determined later.
