Objective:
The extended graduate orientation program
is a strongly recommended activity for the beginning graduate
students. The main purpose is to help create from the very
beginning a supportive social environment of graduate students,
faculty, and staff, in which we can all work most effectively
and get the students ready for the Fall classes.
The orientation program is organized around a mathematical topic for discussion, study and group activities. This is not meant to be a remedial course, and does not necessarily cover topics that will be seen again in the qualifying courses. Subjects vary from year to year; for this year I have chosen topics in modern probability theory.
Most activities will take place in Cupples I, room 199. Lunch at the lounge, room 200. Bring your lunch! The lounge has a refrigerator, microwave oven and other amenities for general use. Mary Ann will provide some cool beverage, chips and cookies.
Activities will run from August 14 till August 18, with meetings on Monday (8/14), Wednesday (8/16), and Friday (8/18).
On Monday and Wednesday we'll have two sessions: one in the morning (10:00AM - 12:00PM) and one in the afternoon (2:00PM - 4:00PM); on Friday we'll only meet in the morning. Each session will contain a combination of exposition, discussions and group work, as well as meetings with some of our math staff and faculty and the math librarian. Tuesdays and Thursdays are devoted to homework, with the students responsible for organizing their own time.
On Friday the 18th we'll have lunch at Blueberry Hill, together with the staff and some of the faculty.
Math activities will be based on the text: "Lectures on Contemporary Probability," by Lawler and Coyle. Don't buy it! Free copies will be provided to you at the beginning of classes or earlier after your arrival.
