Lecture and Discussion Sections for Math 132, Spring 2017 You should be registered for one of the two lecture sections for the course: Section 1 MWF 10-11 in Wilson 214 Our class and discussion section meetings actually begin at ten minutes after hour and end
on the hour. Please
try to avoid late
arrivals
and early departures which can distract other students. You are responsible for any material covered in the lecture meetings (whether or not in the textbook) and for any announcements made in class. If you must be absent, check with a responsible friend to see what you missed.
The
two lecture sections will be following the same "schedule," but
inevitably they will sometimes get a little out of sync with each other
day-to-day. It's OK to attend the other section (the one
you're not registered for) occasionally when something special comes up
in your schedule, but otherwise you should probably try to
stick
with the same section. You should also be registered for one of the weekly discussion sections:
There will a 15 minute quiz in your discussion section in most weeks -- a total of 9 quizzes. The "quiz weeks" are clearly marked in the schedule on the Daily Assignments Page. In each discussion section the quiz will be given at or near the beginning of the meeting. The section must move on when the quiz time ends, so if you're late, then you lose time or may not have time to take the quiz at all. A quiz will have two problems, each worth 3 points. Unless otherwise announced, the problems will be based on lecture/syllabus material the 4 classes F-M-W-F preceding the quiz (so material from a Monday immediately before a quiz is not included). Missed quizzes count as 0's, but for grading purposes at the end of the semester, you will be allowed to discard the three lowest quiz scores--except that you can only drop ONE of the last three quizzes. There will be NO make-up quizzes -- so save your "throw-away" quizzes for those days when you are sick or have some other urgent need to take care of. For the time remaining after a quiz, or in weeks when there is no quiz, the discussion section format may vary from week to week. Some weeks may have a worksheet for use together with the TA. Other weeks the TA may have some material to present, or may simply answer any questions about recent homeworks. You are responsible for content in any material that appears in a discussion handout sheet, and these will always be posted online after that discussion section. You should attend the discussion section for which you are registered. This is important to help record quiz scores correctly. Also, graded exams will be returned to you in the discussion section for which you're registered. |
