CALCULUS  HELP  SESSIONS
There are a number of ways to get help with hard problems or for understanding some material a little better .
Firstly my     office hours      Monday through Thursday.   You should feel free to come in and talk about
any material  . If you can't make those hours you can speak to me or send me an e-mail   and perhaps we can find another  time .
Another possibility is to use one of the office hours of your 131 subsection.

Next there is   the     Calculus Help Room   and   Calculus Help  Desk . It will first open September 5th.
Details about these can be found  on  : www.math.wustl.edu/~blake/undergraduates/ta_officehours.html
and                      www.artsci.wustl.edu/%7Efreiwald/help.html .

Then   there  is   PLTL  at which you  work together with other students and a leader to solve problems .
There are 32 spots for PLTL which will be filled by lottery if necessary.
You can contact  PLTL via website  :   www.math.wustl.edu/~lisak/pltl.html  .
Any questions can be answered using e-mail:    lisak@math.wustl.edu .

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
QUIZES   :  You will have  9   quizes during the semester  each taken at the begining of  your discusssion section .
The    dates of the  9  quizes can be found below  on the  Syllabus . On the syllabus you can find a  list of sections from which problems
come on  each of the  9  quizes . The problems are usually similar to the suggested exercises for  each of  those sections .
The   total quiz score   at the end of the semester  will be the sum of the best  6  out of  9
quiz scores   ,  with  at least   two coming from your  last  4   .

  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WEBWORK  :  There will be  10  Webworks  over the semester  . Each WW must be completed by 11:59 PM  on the due  date .
These dates appear on the syllabus below .  To get onto WW first click  "webwork" on the Math Dept.  page  .
After that you will see places for your ID number  and your password .  To start with, your password is your ID number .
Once you get on you can change your password for future use . Note that all the due dates are on some Friday  .
Each Webwork will have  10  problems the solution of each must be   entered   online . The system will tell you if your answer is correct
or incorrect . If  it is  incorrect you may  try  again and again , as many times as you like  .

2. Grading Information

There will be three evening exams during the semester, E1 , E2 , E3 .

There will also be a final,  F .

Exam Date Location Time Solutions
E1 September   26
Check here on exam day. 6:30-8:30PM Solutions
E2 October    24
Check here on exam day. 6:30-8:30PM Solutions
E3 November  14
Check here on exam day. 6:30-8:30PM Solutions
 F
December    17
Check here on exam day. 10:30 AM -12:30 PM   Solutions

GRADES  :   Each of the Exams  1-4  will count  18%  toward the final course grade  .  Similarly the grade of  the quizzes will  be  18%  .
The  WeBWorK  will  be   10% .

To be more precise ,   If   E1 , E2 , E3 , and F  are your four exam scores ,   QU  is your  quiz score ,  WeB  your WeBWorK score
then your  total   T    is given by  :

T = .18(E1 + E2 + E3 + F  + QU )   +  .10 WeB

In cases where your lowest score  on     E1,E2, E3   is  less  than   F   then in the formula  that score  will be replaced    by   F   .
EXAMPLE   :  if   E2  is your  lowest  score  and  it is  less than   F  , then the formula  would read   T = .18(E1+F+E3+F+Qu)  +  .10 WeB
.

As for your    letter grade     for the course ,   your grade     cannot be lower     than what it would be if it were based  on  the scale appearing in the following table. .

Numerical Range Letter Grade
    90     to   100
A
   80    to    89
B
   65   to    79
C
    50  to     64
D
       Below   50
F   or  NC

Missed Exams  :   If you are  unable to take one of   Exams  E1-E3 for legitimate reasons ( such as verified illness or serious family emergency )  you  will be given an excused absence
for that eam .
NO INTERM MAKEUP EXAMS ARE GIVEN  .
Your grade for the missed interm exam will be calculated by a   statistical proceedure which uses your scores on the other taken exams, including the Final  .

If you miss the Final Exam   for a  legitimate reason then you  will be given a  make-up  Final exam at the begining of the next semester  .
Not coming because you overslept or forgot the time of the exam is   not  a legitimate reason  .

Policy  for  taking exams :

You should always bring your Washington University Photo  ID  to exams ; proctors will check student ID's .
A standard-sized  3x5  index card will be permitted as a "cheat sheet" on the exams.
If a calculator is allowed for a particular exam or quiz it must be a  Scientific caculator .

Just before each exam you can look up your exam room assignment on the web  (see above, "check here on exam day" ) . The room will probably not be your regular classroom, and it may change for each exam. You will be allowed to enter the exam room a few minutes before the starting time to locate your seat and personalized exam booklet which will have your name printed on it in large letters.

EXAM   RETURNS   :    There will be a short time after each exam is graded  when you can look at your graded exam  in the Math Office  ( Cupples  I  ,  room  100 )   if you feel there might have been some error in the grading  . After that the exams will be put out in a cabinet by the Math 131 bulletin board on the first floor of Cupples I , for you to pick up .  Once the exams are returned it will be  more difficult to check for  possible errors in grading .

Resources  for  Help with  Math 131    :    Old Exams  and solutions are posted on the web as a study guide ( see above , "solutions" ) .  This comes from the Math Department page and it includes exams from the past  semesters , starting with   Spring 2000 .   Copies of some of these exams should also be available to view or copy at the Reserve Desk of Olin Library.

Calculus Study Group   :   Study groups are organized as needed  by   The Center for Advanced Learning    located  in   Conerstone  ( in Gregg Hall on the south 40 ) .  They are conducted by graduate and undergraduate math students . If you want to belong to such a study group you must make a commitment to   attend the group regularly   ( not just  " come when you feel like it"  ) .  For more information you can look on the website   cornerstone.wustl.edu      or   call them  at    935-5970  .
