Calculators
for Math 131, Spring 2004
A calculator
can
be a useful tool to save time and check arithmetic, but also to do
calculations
and explorations which would not be manageable otherwise.
However,
you should not become overly dependent on your calculator. There
are basic skills in calculus which we believe you should be able to
carry
out "by hand." Therefore, graphing calculators will not be allowed
on exams
and will not
be allowed on most (and possibly all) quizzes. Calculators
are acceptable for use in studying and in doing homework, but it is
important to not rely on and become dependent upon your calculator
(particularly because you will not have use of one during testing
situations).
We will allow use of a scientific calculator on exams, and the exam
proctors will check your calculator to make sure it is a legal
one. Acceptable scientific calculators include the Ti30 series
(Ti35, Ti36X, Ti30XA), the Casio FX-115 MS, and other more primitive
versions. If you are unsure, please consult the instructor to
verify that your calculator is acceptable. However, the exams
will be written with the intention that students can successfully solve
all of the problems without needing a calculator.
