Taking Calculus Elsewhere in Summer School Programs

Our Calculus II courses (Math 132 or 1322) cover the material in the
standard Calculus II sequence at most universities that are on a semester
system, and there's usually not a problem taking Calculus III
 elsewhere if necessary.

However, students who complete Math 131 (Calculus I) at Washington
University and are considering taking Calculus II elsewhere over the
summer should note the following information.

The material in our current text (S03, Stewart, Calculus: Concepts and Contexts) is
arranged a little differently than the material in some other standard texts.
Courses in Calculus II at other schools might assume at the start that
you're familiar with the material in Chapter 5 of our textbook, even though
Math 131 only goes through Chapter 4.  Therefore it might be difficult to
follow Math 131 with Calculus II at summer school elsewhere.  If you need
to take Calculus II, it might be safer to plan on taking it here (in the
 summer is ok).

If you're considering taking a calculus course at another school and
transferring it here as the equivalent of a Washington University course, the
safest thing is to check first with the Math Department that the courses are
equivalent.   Contact Professor Blake Thornton.  (Cupples I, 203A, 314-935-6301).
To discuss transferring upper division courses, contact either Professor Thornton or
 Professor Ron Freiwald (314-935-6737)
