Missouri MAA Collegiate Mathematics Contest

On April 3-4,  WU teams competed in the Missouri Collegiate Mathematics Competition, sponsored by the Missouri Section of the Mathematical Association of America.  The competition was held, as part of the annual section meeting, on the Washington University campus.

Only two official teams were allowed to enter the competition from each school, and only those teams were eligible for awards.  However unofficial teams could also be entered.  A total of 26 official teams
and 6 unofficial teams participated.  Team participants included about 93 undergraduate students
from 16 Missouri colleges and universities.

The two official WU teams ranked in first place (Ben Birnbaum, Aaron Hauptmann and Nat Watson) and fourth place (Matt Dobson, Adam Marcus, and Ben Robinson.)

W.U. entered two unofficial teams as well.  One of these (Chris Hrdlicka, Matt Ince and Nate Ince) actually ranked 2nd of the 32 teams in terms of test scoring; the other (Do-Hsiang Lai) ranked 10th.

The trophy for the first place win will be displayed in the case at the east end of the first floor hall of Cupples I.

Putnam Competition, December 2002

Approximately 3349 students from the US and Canada participated in the competition, which is held on the first Saturday of December each year.

Congratulations to:

WU seniors Aaron Hauptmann and Adam Marcus ranked in the top 100 nationally.
Andrew Foerster and Bryce Johnson ranked in the top 200.
Six other WU students (Ben Birnbaum, Matt Dobson, Roman Garnett, Bill Kinnersley,
Po-Hsiang Lai, and Nat Watson) also ranked in the top 500.

The Washington University Team (Aaron Hauptmann, Bryce Johnson, Ben Robinson) ranked 58th nationally out of 376 teams from 476 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

Since 1976, Washington University teams have placed in the "top ten" in 18 of 27 competitions, including eleven
"top five" performances.  _____________________________________________________________________________

It was announced in fall 2001 that Prof. Ed Spitznagel had been selected to receive the Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics.  This national award, sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, was presented at the annual MAA meeting held in January 2002 in San Diego.
