Math 128, Spring
’10, Information about Chapter 12
Some of the
material in Chapter 12 is more sophisticated than the material in Chapter 11.
Some of the material is presented at a higher level of abstraction than the
previous chapter and some of the ideas used in interpretation are more subtle. Although
we will skip some of this material, the slightly more abstract and conceptual
issues that are covered in class as well as the associated discussion and
examples in the book are material that could be used for exam questions. For
instance exam questions could be built out of Example 2 on page 414, Example 2
on page 417, or Examples 2 or 4 on page 429.
Some of the
specifics in Chapter 12 involve topics that we will not consider. The following
sections will be skipped and should not be considered part of the course:
·
the
last part of §12.5, beginning with equation (2) on pg 421,
·
the
last part of §12.6, the subsection titled Geometric Aspects of Homogenous
Functions,
·
the
last part of §12.7 titled Homothetic Functions,
·
all
of §12.10, and
·
all of §12.11.
