Calculus II for the Life, Social and Managerial Sciences

Lectures:  MWF 10—11 AM, Rebstock 215

Discussion Sections: You must be enrolled in one; they are Thursday 9 AM, 10 AM, or 12 PM. They will be run by the course’s teaching assistant, Jeffrey Langford (jlang@math.wustl.edu).  His will hold office hours in the Lopata Calculus Help Room. You can also get help in that room or the Cornerstone Calculus Help Room whenever they are open.

 

 

Content: We will cover Chapters 11—14 and perhaps some of Chapter 17 of the text Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis by Sydsaeter and Hammon.

Office Hours:  MWF 11-12 or any other time that I’m in my office; I’m in my office parts of most days. If you want to make a definite appointment we can set that up before or after class or by e-mail.

Calculators: You should bring a basic scientific calculator to exams and quizzes. You may not bring a graphing or programmable calculator.

 

WebWork:  There will be WebWork assignments each week, except the weeks of midterm exams and Spring Break. The assignments will be available at 9AM on Monday of the week, all answers must be submitted before 8PM on Thursday of that week, and the solutions will be available on Saturday morning. The first assignment will be available Monday, January 25.

 

Quizzes:  Those same weeks there will be a short quiz at the beginning of the discussion section. The first quiz will be Thursday, January 28.

 

Grades: Your semester grade for WebWork will be based on your 8 best scores. Your semester grade for the quizzes will be based on your 8 best quiz scores. Your numerical grade at the end of the semester will be based on the semester quiz grade and WebWork grade, each counting 10% of the total; and the four exam grades, three midterms and the final exam, each counting 20% of the total.

 

The scale for converting numerical grades to letter grades will be set at the end of the semester. However everyone with a score of 90 or above will receive an A- or better, 80 or above a B- or better and 65 or above a C- or better.
