Subject: This is an advanced class in linear algebra. We will study abstract vector spaces and linear transformations. I will assume that you have some knowledge of matrix algebra (at the level of Math 309) and some degree of mathematical sophistication (at the level of Math 310). You should be ready to work hard, as we will cover a large amount of material.

Grades and academic integrity: Grades will be based on homework assignments (I expect to give about ten), one mid-term exam and the final exam. You may consult with your fellow students (or anyone else) about the homework, but you must write your own solutions and inform me of all sources you use.

Text: Linear Algebra (2nd edition), by K. Hoffman and R. Kunze. We will attempt to learn most of chapters 2-9. I will expect that you are familiar with most of the material in chapter 1, although I will spend some time discussing fields.
