Syllabus
Topics. Multivariable calculus: differential and integral calculus
of functions of two or three variables; vectors and curves in space, partial
derivatives, multiple integrals and vector calculus through Green's
Theorem. Graphing calculator required. Appropriate computer software will
also be introduced.
Prerequisites. Math 132, or a score of 4 or better
on the Advanced Placement Calculus Exam (BC version).
Time. Classes meet Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays:
- Section 1: 9:00 am to 10:00 am in Cupples I, room 115
- Section 2: 10:00 am to 11:00 am in McDonnell Hall, room 362

Text. The lectures will follow Calculus:
Concepts and Contexts (Third Edition), by James Stewart, ISBN
0-534-40986-5, from Brooks/Cole Publishing Co. (2005). Previous editions of
the text are fine, too.
Computing. Some software may be useful for homework
assistance during this course, such as the old free Matlab package, or the
newer version available on computers in the Arts and Sciences Computing
Center in Eads Hall. A good introduction may be found in Using
Matlab in Calculus by Gary Jensen, ISBN 0-13-027268-X from Prentice
Hall (2000).
Any calculator may be used for homework, for both symbolic and numerical
computations, but certain calculators are prohibited
during examinations.
Homework. You are encouraged to collaborate on homework and to
work additional exercises from the textbook, although the
homework grade will be based only on the exercises listed below. Please complete your solutions online by 5:00 pm on the due
date. First log in with your student ID number as both Username and
Password, then change the Password to something more secure.

Late homework will not be accepted.
Examinations.
-
Midterm examinations will be given from 6:30-8:30 pm on: February 8
(Exam 1 solutions), March 14 (List of Skills)(Exam 2
solutions), and April 12 (List of Skills)(Exam 3 solutions). Click here on examination day
for your seat location.
[Note: There was a typographical error in Problem 12 of Midterm #2,
and some students did not receive the correction in time to find the answer,
which was (I). For fairness, the exam will be re-graded ignoring Problem 12
and the score will be based on the remaining 17 problems.
After the re-grading, the exam look-up site will show your answer for Problem
12 as incorrect, regardless of what it was, because the grading program is
ignoring your answer.]
-
Final examination will be held on Friday, May 6th, 2005, 10:30 am to
12:30 pm. You may use this list of
skills to check your preparation. Click here on
examination day for your seat location.

Policy
- Always bring your Washington University Photo ID to exams;
proctors will check student ID's.
-
A standard-sized 3x5 index card will be permitted as an aid during
each examination.
-
Graphing calculators are allowed, including models TI-83, TI-83 Plus,
and TI-86, but NOT any model that contains a ``Computer Algebra System
(CAS)'' such as models TI-89, TI-92, HP-48 and HP-49.
Use of a calculator with a built-in CAS during an exam will be viewed as an
academic integrity violation that will be referred to the Academic Integrity
Committee.
-
Just before each exam you can look up your exam room
assignment on the web. The room will probably not be your regular
classroom, and it may change for each exam. You will be allowed to enter
the exam room a few minutes before the starting time to locate your seat and
personalized exam booklet, which will have your name printed on it in large
letters.
- For a short time after it is graded an exam may be checked in the
Math Office (Cupples I, room 100) for any errors. After that the exams
will be put out for pick up in a cabinet by the Math 233 bulletin board on
the first floor of Cupples I.
Grading. One score will be assigned for homework, one for the
midterm examinations combined, and one for the final examination. These
three will contribute in respective shares of 50%, 20%, and 30% to the course
score. Letter grades, computed from the course score, will be at least the
following:
| Course score at least: | 90% | 80% | 70% | 60% |
Letter grade at least: | A | B | C | D |
Students taking the Cr/NCr or P/F options
will need a grade of D or better to pass.
