Welcome to the webpage for Math 430. This course is an introduction to algebraic structures: groups, rings, and fields.
Prerequisites:
Math 429 or permission of instructor
Textbook:
A first course in Abstract Algebra by John B. Fraleigh
Office hour:
Thursday 2:30-4pm, 5:30-6:30pm, and by appointment
Homework:
There will be weekly homework. The homework is due on Friday at the beginning of class. Late homework
will not be accepted.
You are encouraged to discuss the problems but the write-up must be your own. The grader for this course is Liwei Chen
(chenlw@math.wustl.edu).
I expect there will be 12 problem
sets. The two lowest homework grades will be dropped and the remaining 10 will be counted towards your final course grade.
Exams:
There will be one midterm exam during the semester. It is schedule for Tuesday March 8th, 6-7:30pm.

There will also be a final exam (May 11).
If you are unable to take the midterm exam for legitimate reasons, you will not be given a make up exam.

Grading Information:
The midterm and the homework will each count for 30 percent of your grade. The final exam will count for 40 percent of your grade.
