Math 132L Lab Course

General Description of 132L
Concurrent registration in the laboratory course Math 132L (1 unit) is required by the Mathematics department of all
students registered in math 132. Its purpose is to use simple data collection "experiments" to illustrate the use of
mathematics in modelling physical situations.

Each section of 132L will meet 6 times during the semester, always in Cupples I room 203. Be sure you know which
section you are registered for, and always attend that particular lab. For a list of sections, and their meeting times
see Spring 2006 132L schedule.

Since some experiments require more than 2 hands, you will work in teams of two (formed during the first meeting) to
collect data, save it and complete a lab report during the following week.

Logger Pro

You will be using software called Logger Pro to help collect and analyze the data. You will probably use this outside
of lab period (during which there is barely time to collect the data, let alone analyze it.) You should bring
a floppy to lab to collect the data, or email it to yourself from the lab.

Computers running Logger Pro are available at the Arts and Sciences Computing Center in the basement of Eads hall
and at Cornerstone on the South 40. If you'd like to install a copy on your personal machine click here for a download.
The software will run on a Mac, but Apple fans will not be surprised to learn there may be a hassle using the self-
install program. Please talk to your lab instructor for information on Mac installation.

You may also want to download a copy of the Logger Pro Manual and/or a copy of the Logger Pro Tutorial

Grading of 132L
We view 132L as an integral part of a four-unit Math 132. The only reason it is listed as a seperate course is that the crusty
old software at the Registrar's office allows a course to have a maximum of two parts, lecture and lab. A three part course
wont fit.

Your 132L grade will normally be the same as your 132 grade (based on exams, quizzes and WebWork) unless you
fail to submit all required lab reports, in which case it may be lower. Your laboratory grade counts as 10% of your
couse grade
