U08 6010 EDUC, Hands-on science K-8: Mathematics Concepts, Spring 2002

Course Information

Description: A detailed study of the mathematics of grades K-8 focused on topics brought to the class by the teachers enrolled in the course. Choosing topics of concern to them, such as areas of poor results by their pupils on standardized tests, teachers in the course will present these topics to the class with a summary of the mathematical principles being addressed by their presentation. The class will then analyze the mathematical content of the presentation in order to:

Follow up discussion will be conducted again at the next week's session. Analyses of the presentations will pay particular attention to

Time and Location: 4:30 - 7:00 pm Wednesdays in room 118 Life Sciences.

Organization: Each session will have three presentations, each with its discussion taking about forty minutes. The remaining half-hour will be used for breaks, organizational matters, possible over-time on some presentations, and follow-up from the previous week's presentations. Click here for a Lesson Schedule which will be updated as students schedule their presentations.

Grade requirements: Grades will be based on the presentations and class participation. It is expected that the presentations will be similar to, if not identical to, lessons presented by the teachers in their own classrooms, with a description added articulating the mathematical points (for example, which standards) being addressed by the lesson. Each student in the course will make at least three presentations during the semester.

Instructor: Gary R. Jensen. His office is in room 104, Cupples I. Office phone is 935-6302, e-mail address is gary@math.wustl.edu, home phone 862-4569.

Text: Fundamentals of Arithmetic, Preliminary Draft, by Gary R. Jensen, will be provided to the students free of charge.
