Math 366, Spring 1998, Homework One
HW1, Due Friday, January 16
Read pages 15--25 (to the beginning of Section 1.3) of the Student Resource Manual (SRM). Do preliminary work on scratch paper. What you hand in should be a very readable summary of your solution to a problem or your answer to a question. Begin writing up your solutions on this sheet. Continue on additional sheets of the same size and never torn from a spiral notebook. Staple the sheets together. Unstapled pages will be accepted only once from any given student.
- In Example 1, pages 22 - 23 of the SRM, explain why the two given solutions are the only ones possible. Your explanation should include why you can't get a solution by putting a penny in any of the corner squares.
- Solve and explain your solution to Example 4 on page 24 of the SRM.
- Do Critical Thinking exercise 9 on page 32 of the Activity Book (AB). Remember that in all of these problems an explanation as to how you get the answer is more important than the answer itself. No credit will be given for an answer given by itself with no explanation.
- Do Critical Thinking exercise 11 on page 32 of the AB.
- Do Critical Thinking exercise 12 on page 32 of the AB.
