The course will meet MWF 11-12 in room 111 Cupples I. The first class is Monday, January 12, 2009.
The lectures will be based on a book manuscript of mine, a copy of which will be provided. You may see the notes at www.math.wustl.edu/~gary/Surfbook.pdf. This is not a link, because I don't want the notes widely distributed yet.
The prerequisite is an introductory course on manifold theory, equivalent to our Math 5041. I will begin with a detailed review of differential forms and exterior derivative. The existing notes begin with an introduction to Riemannian geometry on surfaces. The first four chapters of the notes will be covered. Further topics will be chosen after some discussion.
Homework will consist mostly of doing the many excercises in the notes. There will be no examinations.
