For #12  in HW 8, you apply the result for convex sets to the open ball around a point x in the open connected set.  Any path from x to y in the open connected set can be covered with open balls that lie completely in the open connected set (by the open property).  Applying the result from the first part to each convex open set (each open ball is convex) shows that the function is constant on the path from x to y.  Since x and y were arbitrary, the function is constant on the whole set. 

 

Reese’s cups bag of treats:  So, I also got a bag of Reese’s cups (my favorite sweet) from the math 201 students.  I offered some to my officemate (from China).  In all innocence, she asked me immediately, “How do you eat it?”
