be based on exam scores, quiz scores, and homework scores with
the following weights:

John's Final Exam score (84) is better than his Exam 2 score (62), so we replace the 62 with 84. So what is his letter grade for the course? The information below gives some guidelines to help John think about his letter grade. |
General guidelines about final letter grades:
A final formula for converting percents into letter grades will not be determined until after the final. This allows the instructor more flexibility (and generally works in the students favor). However, in order to give you a sense of where you stand in the course, we note the following general guidelines about final letter grades.
In past semesters, Calculus I has roughly had the following final course grade distribution (i.e. the percentage of students who earned each particular letter grade).
Letter Grade Distribution (%) A 5
A- 14 B+ 24 B 36 B- 48 C+ 60 C 75
C- 88
D 94 The distribution represents the percentage of students who received a particular letter grade, so 5% of the students received an A, 14% received an A- or higher (making it 9% of the students who earned an A-), and so forth. We will continue to follow this trend, with the caveat that we will not be more strict than the following scale. (Note that the scale is in terms of your total score in the class.)
What does this mean for you? When you check your exam grade online, you will receive two numbers: your total score and where your score falls in relation to the rest of the class. The latter number will be in the form of a percent, so if your percent is 20 (meaning that 20% of the students scored higher than you and 80% scored lower than you), then by our scale above, your test letter grade is a B+. We hope that this gives you an idea of how you are doing throughout the semester.
TOTAL SCORE GUARANTEED LETTER GRADE

As for John Doe, by the Guaranteed Letter Grade, his grade is guaranteed to be some form of a B, probably a B-. As for the curve, suppose John's total score fell in the top 30% of the class. By our "distribution" (curved) scale, John would receive a B. However, this is intended to only give you a rough idea of what letter grade your exam translates into. As said above, a final formula is not determined until after the final exam.
Students taking the course with the "Credit/No Credit" ("Pass/Fail") grading option must earn a grade of "C-" or better to receive a "pass".
Any students taking the course on an "audit" basis should talk with the instructor to determine what criteria will be used award a grade of "successful audit."
