Math 100: Foundations for Calculus, Fall 2006
Syllabus

Text: Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, Fifth Edition by Stewart et al. We will use most of chapters 1-7 during the course of the semester.

Instructor: Nic Sedlock (nic@math.wustl.edu)

Web Site: http://www.math.wustl.edu/~nic. This page contains the syllabus, as well as links to a page on academic integrity and a daily schedule for the class.

Office: Cupples I, Room 203

Office Hours: Monday, 1pm-3pm. If you have questions about anything, I strongly encourage you to come see me for help.

Class Time and Location: Cupples I, Room 111, Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30-10am.

Graphing Calculator: You will need a graphing calculator. The TI-83 or TI-83+ is the standard model that I will use when I use a calculator in class. If you have a different model, you will be responsible for knowing its functions, but I will help you as much as I can. During some quizzes, I may forbid the use of a calculator, but I will do so explicitly; if I don't say anything, you may assume you are allowed to use a calculator on any given quiz. Some calculators have Computer Algebra Systems that are capable of automatically doing algebraic manipulation, and those are not allowed during any quiz or the final exam, and I strongly discourage your use of them on homework, since they do all the work for you.

Homework: Homework will be assigned every class day over the material covered in class. Answers to most of the problems will be in the back of the book to allow you to check your work. I expect you to do all the assigned problems, but will only collect and grade a smaller portion of the problems. I will tell you which problems I will grade. Sadly, the only way to get a good grasp of the skills you will need in Calculus is to do a lot of practice problems, so I again encourage you to do all the problems.
Furthermore, I encourage you to work with your classmates to get the hang of what's going on in the homework, but handed-in homework should be your own work.

Study Sessions: To that end, Bennett Standeven, another graduate student in the department, will be running homework study sessions that you should go to. During these sessions, he will help you with any homework I've assigned you, as well as answer quiz problems you may be confused about.
The study sessions will be held on Wednesday and Friday from 3-4pm, in Lopata Hall, Room 201. Bennett is also available in the Calculus Help Room (in room 102 in Lopata Hall) on Mondays from 11am-1pm.

Quizzes: Every Thursday, you will have a quiz that covers the material covered since the last quiz. This quiz will be 30 minutes in length, and will be held at the beginning of class. You will be allowed the use of your calculator unless I say otherwise. Each quiz will be worth 5% of your final grade. Since there are 13 Thursdays of class (besides the first day of class), your lowest quiz grade will be dropped.

Final Exam: The final exam will be two hours in length, and will be held in a place and time to be determined.

Grade Breakdown: Your final grade will be based on the following: Links:
