The William Lowell Putnam Examination is a nationwide competition in Mathematics at the level of freshman calculus. It will be held this year on Saturday, December 7th, 2013.
Putnam Examination practice sessions meet on Fridays from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, in Compton Hall's room 241 at Washington University in St. Louis. The first meeting is Friday, September 13. Feel free to drop in, learn problem solving methods and enjoy the free pizza.
More sample problems:
- "Let f and g be real-valued functions defined on an open interval containing O, with g nonzero and continuous at O. If fg and f/g are differentiable at O, must f be differentiable at O ?"
- "Given a triangle with vertices A, B, C, reflect A across B to A', reflect B across C to B', and reflect C across A to C'. What is the ratio of the areas of triangle A'B'C' and triangle ABC? "
- "Suppose that x and y are real numbers strictly between O and 1. Prove that x y + y x > 1."
