Math 429: Linear Algebra
Spring 2021
Welcome to the webpage for Math 429. This course is an introduction to linear algebra of finite-dimensional vector spaces.
Topics include:
vector spaces, linear maps, eigenvectors and eigenvalues, polynomials, upper triangular and diagonal matrices, generalized eigenspaces and Jordan forms,
operators on real vector spaces.
Prerequisites:
Math 310 or permission of instructor
Textbook:
Linear Algebra Done Right by Sheldon Axler (third edition)
Office hour: Monday 11AM-12PM, Thursday 5PM-6:30PM. (Starting from the week of Feb 1)
Exams:
There will be two midterm exams during the semester. There will also be a final exam. The first midterm exam is tentatively scheduled for March 1, and the second midterm exam is tentatively scheduled for April 14. If you are unable to take one of the midterm exams for legitimate reasons, you will not be given a make up exam.
Grading Information:
The midterm exams will each count for 14 percent and the final exam will count for 22 percent of your course grade. Your homework grade will count for 40, and the quiz grade will be 10 percent of your course grade.
Your letter grade will be based on the following scale:
| A+ | A | A- | B+ | B | B- | C+ | C | C- | D | F |
| TBA | [90,100) | [85,90) | [80,85) | [75,80) | [70,75) | [65,70) | [60,65) | [55,60) | [50,55) | [0,50) |
Homework: There will be weekly homework. The homework is due on Friday (starting from Friday February 5). Late homework will not be accepted.
You are encouraged to discuss the problems with other students, but the write-up must be your own. Adherence to the university's academic integrity policy is expected and required. In particular, your homework submissions must be written up separately and individually - copying is never allowed, and will be treated as an act of plagiarism.
I expect there will be 11 problem sets. The lowest homework grade will be dropped and the remaining 10 will be counted towards your final course grade.
