What will the format for Exam 2 be?
48% of the exam will be multiple choice, 12% will be True-False, 40% will be hand-graded. Closed book, no notes allowed; you may use a scientific (non-graphing) calculator, although you will not need one.

    Time: 6:30-8:30 p.m.
    Location: The exam WILL NOT be in the regular classroom. To find your location and seat number, on the day of the exam check here.

    What sections will be covered on the exam?
    About 15% of the exam will be a review of functions, while the the other 85% will focus on limits, up to and including the definition of the derivative. Specifically, possible topics are anything covered in Stewart sections 2.1-2.3, 2.5-2.7, with the exception of the discussion of the formal definition of a limit at infinity in 2.6.

    What topics will be covered on the exam?
    Anything that comes up in the section listing above could appear on the exam. Certainly the following ideas should be high priorities.
    • Functions:
      • Finding the domain
      • Combining functions, including function composition
    • Limits:
      • Numerical limits
      • Graphical limits
      • Algebraic techniques for finding limits
      • Limits at infinity
      • Horizontal and vertical asymptotes
    • Derivatives: Know the definition of the derivative and how to use it
    What will the format be?
    70% of the exam will be multiple choice, 30% will be hand-graded. Closed book, no notes allowed; you may use a scientific (non-graphing) calculator, although you will not need one.

    Where to get practice:
    • Work through the suggested examples in the text, and try other examples in areas where you need more practice.
    • The first three WebWork assignments include excellent sample problems.
    • Check out the Exam Archive, in particular the 131 area. There are a lot of exams here, and as you have time feel free to browse them all, but keep in mind some of the Exam 1's focus more on functions than ours will. Two good ones to start with are these recent exams, Fall 2015 Exam 1 and Fall 2016 Exam 1.


    Where to get help before the exam:
    • The instructor Chris Cox will have regular office hours Monday 11-12 and will be available for last minute questions Tuesday until 4:30. (Email for an appointment.)
    • Meredith Sargent will be in the Calc Help Room during her regular times Monday and Tuesday afternoon 2-3.
    • There will be a review led by Calc RPMs Monday, February 6 in Simon 023 7-9pm.
