Putnam Practice Sessions
The Putnam Examination is a nationwide
undergraduate mathematics competition . The competition will be
held this year on Saturday, December 4.
A weekly meeting for practice with problem solving
methods will be held on Friday afternoons (4-6) weekly in Compton 241.
The first (organizational) meeting will be on Friday,
September 17.
If you want to participate in these sessions but
aren't sure about taking the exam itself in December, you're still
welcome.
There will be free pizza at the meetings!

The annual
Pew Undergraduate Research Symposium will be hosted on
the WU campus this fall, Friday, Nov. 5-Sunday, Nov. 7. There
will be opportunities for UG research
talks. More information will be sent
out when available. If you're working on any project, think about
the possibility of paritcipating.
The annual
Putnam Exam Competition will be held on the first
Saturday in December (12/4) on the WU Campus.
The annual Missouri Collegiate Mathematics Competition will
be held on Thursday evening, March 31 and Friday morning April 1, 2005
on the campus of Missouri Western
State College (St. Joseph, Missouri). We
have usually sent one or more teams to
take part and would like to do so again. Mark
your calendars if you’re interested.
The Department will cover
the
teams’ expenses. Mark your calendars.

Congratulations
to 2003-2004 Math Competition Teams
Missouri
Collegiate Mathematics Competition (April 2004)
Congratulations to our team in the annual Missouri Collegiate
Mathematics Competition sponsored by the Missouri Section of the
Mathematics Association of America.
The contest was held this year on the campus of Southeast Missouri
State University in Cape Girardeau. Our team, consisting
of Andy Feldman, Lai Po-Hsiang
and Nathaniel Watson, placed seond in a field of 28 teams.
Putnam Competition (December 2003)
Approximately 3615 students from colleges and universities in the US
and Canada participated in the
competition, which is held on the first Saturday of
December each
year.
Congratulations to:
WU freshman Jon Pinyan who ranked in the top 100 nationally.
WU
sophomore Po-Hsiang Lai who ranked in the top 200 nationally.
WU students Dan Sinkovits (senior), Jun Qian (junior), and Ben Robinson
(sophomore) who ranked in the top 500 nationally.
The Washington University Team (Nathaniel Watson, Po-Hsiang Lai, and
Ben Birnbaum)
ranked 45th nationally out of 401 teams.
Since 1976, Washington University teams have placed in the "top ten" in
18 of 28 competitions, including eleven "top five" performances.
