The Math Minor

College rules require that that least half the upper level courses in the minor be taken in Washington University programs.

The department's requirements provide a minor with a broad range of courses touching many of the important areas of mathematics. In each course, a grade of C- or better is required (CR/NCR = "pass/fail" not allowed) for the course to count toward the minor requirements.

At least two of the required upper level courses for the minor must not be "double-counted," that is, must not be used for fulfilling the requirements of another major or minor, or the distribution requirements of another school at the University. (This is particularly relevent to Engineering students.)

Math 1201                                     Programming in C; one of CSE 131, CSE 126, CS 200 may be substituted

Math 309                                      Matrix Algebra

Math 318                                      Calculus of Several Variables
Note that Math 318 has 309 as a prerequisite. It is not the equivalent of 233. Most lower level courses from other colleges with names similar to "Multivariable Calculus" will not serve to replace Math 318. For students particularly interested in the physical sciences, Math 308 may replace Math 318. However 308 and 318 CANNOT be BOTH counted toward a minor (or major) program.

Math 320                                      Elementary Probability and Statistics

One additional course from the Math Department numbered 300 or above.

Note to students in Engineering/Business Planning a Math Minor

SSM 325 or 326 or 326A may substitute for Math 320. SSM 317 may count as an upper level math course, but may not be used in place of Math 308 or 318. Only one of Math 320, SSM 325, 326, 326A can be counted toward the minor requirements.
For business students QBA 120 & 121 together can replace Math 320. In that case, Math 320 may not also be counted toward fulfilling the minor.
