Wash U Graduate Program in Mathematics : M.A. in Mathematics

General requirements: The minimum residence requirement is one full academic year of graduate study. Thirty semester hours of graduate-level course work is required, although this is sometimes modified to 24 hours and a thesis. If the department consents, a student may transfer up to six hours from other universities. A grade point average of "B" or better must be maintained in graduate course work.

Course requirements: There are four basic graduate courses in pure mathematics: 5021-5022, 5031-5032, 5041-5042, and 5051-5052. A candidate for the M.A. in Mathematics must include two of these sequences (12 hours) in the required 30 hours. The student, in consultation with his or her advisor, will select the remaining 18 hours according to the student's interests and needs.

The M.A. examination: Candidates for the M.A. degree must pass two of the four Ph.D. qualifying exams. The student may substitute a comprehensive exam on the contents of Math 411-412, 417-418, and 429-430 for the two qualifying exams.
